NONTO RUBUSHE – DBN
Nonto Rubushe (aka Nonto R), a 32-year-old mother of three from Durban was nominated in the Best Newcomer category at the Savanna Comic Choice Awards.
“In 2015, I was asked to MC an event and to my surprise people were rolling on the floor with laughter while I was busy trying to be serious. Back then it didn’t register to me that this could be a career path even though I always did stand-up comedy for my close friends and family.”
After seeing a poster calling for people to take part in a comedy open mic session made her eager to give it a try. To her surprise, Nonto Rubushe was very good at it and the rest is history.
Nonto Rubushe, (Nonto R) decided to start doing her own shows after winning an award for the Best indigenous comedian in South Africa in 2016. This award gave her a confidence boost and Nonto did her first show whilst pregnant. She told jokes from a pregnant woman’s perspective. This was something Nonto Rubushe had never seen in South Africa before and people loved and enjoyed her show.
After doing two one woman acts, Nonto Rubushe started her “A woman in comedy” concept which is receiving great support in Durban.
